SAGDB players excel at Celebrate Ethekwini Games
Players from the SA Golf Development Board put in impressive performances at the recent Celebrate Ethekweni Games in Durban. The games, which are played in 16 sporting codes, are organised by the Ethekweni District Municipality, which also covered all the costs associated with participation in the event.
In the u/19 category of the golf event, the SAGDB’s Simphiwe Nxumalo carded a gross score of 74 over 18 holes to claim the silver medal. Thobani Mkhize and Sambulo Mhlongo shared the nett prize, after both shot rounds of 91 off their 24 handicaps for nett scores of 67.
The SAGDB claimed a full-house of medals in the u/14 category, which was played in a 9-hole stableford format. Sifundo Ndlovu won gold on 25 points, Nthutuzelo Mgandela took silver on 21 points, and Sizwe Dlamini scored 18 points to win bronze.
The SAGDB was also represented by graduates of the development programme in the u/35 category, where Clifford Mncube won the silver medal.
“It is good to see so many SAGDB players winning medals,” said the development board’s manager in KwaZulu-Natal, Joseph Kunene. “Congratulations must go to the coaches for their commitment, and the results say it all.”
A total of 49 SAGDB juniors entered the golf event, with 35 of them in the u/14 category, and 14 in the u/19 category.
The tournament also formed part of preparations for the KWANALOGA Games, in which teams from KwaZulu-Natal’s municipal regions have an opportunity to compete against each other in early December.
