WGSA gives a chance to SAGDB girls

21 girls from the SA Golf Development Board’s (SAGDB) national coaching programme competed in the recent Nomads SA Girls Championships in Middelburg. The event is a major highlight of the junior golf calendar and brings together the top girl golfers from across South Africa.

The SAGDB girls were all invited to the event by Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA), which covered the expenses of their attendance through its affiliate unions. KwaZulu-Natal, Central Gauteng and Border each sent five girls to the tournament, while Boland sent four and Eastern Province two.

Zina Bheekie from KZN put in the best performance of the girls from the development programme, finishing 22nd overall. The only other SAGDB player in the A section of the tournament, Hybre Davids from Boland, finished a disappointing 39th.

In the B-section of the event, EP’s Kim Daniels finishing tied third and also recorded the second best nett score in the division. Katlego Mhlambi from Central Gauteng came 15th, while Ayabonga Roji from Border claimed 20th place.

It was in the C-division, for players with handicaps of 19-27, that the SAGDB fared best though. Boland’s Carmenita Marsh won the division by scoring 76 stableford points over the two rounds. Tanya Claasen from EP finished fourth.

WGSA has proved is support for golf development by offering girls from the SAGDB the opportunity to compete in this event for the past number of years. The event gives the players from the development programme a chance to measure their progress against players from all over the country.

“This tournament is a learning curve for these girls,” said the SAGDB’s development manager for KZN, Joseph Kunene. “It’s a chance for them to gain experience.”
