SAGDB player selected to play at SA Boys

16-year old Robertson golfer Jacquin Hess has been selected for the Boland u/16 team to play in the prestigious SA Boys tournament in Middelburg during July. Hess, who is coached by the SA Golf Development Board (SAGDB), earned his place by being placed sixth on the current u/16 order of merit in the province.

Hess has improved his game tremendously over the past year, and SAGDB development manager Andre Rossouw says this has a lot to do with his self-discipline. Robertson Golf Club, where Hess is a member, is currently closed for development, so he has been working on his game by practicing in the park.

This level of dedication has made a big difference to his performances, especially since Hess was included in the SAGDB’s elite regional squad. He has had the benefit of being coached by both Kulk Martinus in Worcester as well as regional coach Isaac Mahoney.

“He has a good short game and his putting is excellent,” Rossouw says. “He is consistent with his irons and his accuracy is very good.”

Rossouw believes that Hess’s selection to play at the SA Boys tournament, which is the most important national event for u/16 players, will be a tremendous experience for him.

“He will have a chance to measure himself against the best in South Africa,” Roussouw says. “This will also make him see what opportunities are out there.”

Rossouw expects that the event will broaden the youngster’s outlook and expand his life experience. He also hopes that Hess will have a positive impact on other players in the SAGDB when he returns.

“For someone coming from a small town like Roberton, this will make him a role model for others, since he will gain confidence in his own ability,” says Rossouw.
