Growing the game at Country Club Johannesburg

With over 100 years of history, the Country Club Johannesburg is one of the most famous clubs in South African golf. Its two championship courses in Woodmead are also amongst the top layouts in the country.

The club is not, however, sitting on its laurels. Eager to grow its footprint further, Country Club Johannesburg has teamed up with the SAGDB to support a new coaching chapter.

Although the club has been offering coaching to a group of youngters from Alexandra Township for around a year, it wanted to formalise the programme to ensure that the players are receiving the right guidance to improve and eventually become full members.

Richard Mlambo, a full-time caddy at the Country Club Johannesburg who lives in Alexandra himself, has been conducting the coaching and will continue to do so. He will now, however, have the backing of the SAGDB.

“The club understood the importance of being involved in golf development and with the assistance of Richard Mlambo began slowly bringing in children from Alexandra township,” explains Bevan du Plessis, the club's director of golf. “At first the visits were very slow, however we can now see some momentum growing and with the assistance of the SAGDB I believe we are on the right track. It is an exciting time and we look forward to developing the chapter.”

The SAGDB's development manager in Central Gauteng, Andy Ostle, says he hopes that other clubs in the region will see what is happening at Country Club Johannesburg and follow its lead.

“We are helping the club to run its own chapter, funded by the club itself,” Ostle says. “This is a pilot scheme we hope that other clubs will adopt.”
