Hilmi shows his ability in WP

Hilmi Mallick win the Belville Junior Open Trophy

The April school holidays saw a record number of SAGDB players participating in two Western Province Golf Union (WPGU) junior events. To cap it all 15-year old Hilmi Mallick was crowned the winner at the Bellville Junior Open with an outstanding 3 under 69, beating his nearest challenger by 5 shots.

A record total of 32 SAGDB players entered the Belville Junior Open, representing more than a third of the total field of 89. Besides the outstanding effort of Hilmi, Abduragmaan Adams and Marcelo van Rooyen both shot rounds of 78 to finish within the top five.

The new group of u13 golfers also showed their potential in the C division with a host of good performances. Young SAGDB players aged just nine, ten and eleven finished within the top 7 places. This augurs well for development going forward.

The following day saw the inaugural Kuils River Junior Open. Here again the field was dominated by SAGDB players with a total of 30 playing in a field of 79.

Hilmi was again the SAGDB star performer, finishing third with a level par round of 72. Another notable score was the 75 posted by Ridaah America - good enough for joint 5th spot.

The B and C divisions saw a host of good performances with the new intake of u13 players again dominating the C division. The top 5 were all from the SAGDB.

Hilmi also carried his form into three Glacier Junior Series events around Cape Town. He tied for eighth place at the Glacier event at Steenberg on 75; tied for second at the Paarl event on a score of 73; and tied fourth after a level par round of 72 at the Atlantic Beach tournament.

His good showings in official tournaments have now moved him up to tenth place on the overall junior order of merit in the region.
